Effective July 1, 2015, driving uninsured in Tennessee became costlier, with the fine for driving without the proper insurance increasing from $100 to $300. After January 1, 2016, law enforcement officials could have your car towed on the spot if proof of valid insurance is not produced. Leading up to January 1, 2017, Tennessee will be working on creating and implementing an online program to verify drivers’ insurance. This digital program tracks down drivers without insurance through their vehicle registrations. Owners without insurance will be unable to renew their vehicle’s registration.
